Recognize the specific negative self-talk patterns you have developed.

Make a list of common negative thoughts you have in a typical day and check the list of 10 common distorted thinking patterns to determine which ones you engage in regularly.

There are several key questions you can ask yourself regarding each negative thought that you identify as cropping up with distressing regularity. Below is a quick reference guide that will help you challenge your negative thinking. Copy it, put it where you can see it and practice giving  these thoughts a big thumbs down!

  • What negative situation am I assuming is (or will be) happening to me?
  • What is the evidence to support my conclusions?
  • Could I be exaggerating the situation in m mind?
  • Is there any alternative explanation that could explain what happened or what will happen next? could I be confusing facts with reoccurring thoughts in my mind?
  • Are my conclusion based on emotions rather than on facts?
  • Can I really predict the future?
  • Am I using extreme words and phrases i my thoughts?
  • Am I assuming the worst will happen without evidence of that?

Stress Mastery Rx #10 from Dr. Jack SingerThe next time you feel any negative emotion (overwhelmed, depressed, irritated, impatient, or hopeless), list the specific thoughts that went through your mind just before you felt that emotion. This is the first step in recovering from your stress.

By identifying the thoughts you are able to examine them and determine if the stressor is a perceived problem or a real one.  Once you have identified negative thoughts, the next step is to examine them for reasonableness. Ask yourself to what extent the thoughts are valid. Take the time to look for both evidence that supports and evidence that refutes the thoughts. Writing down the evidence you find helps you gain distance from your thoughts and makes them less self-evident.

Recognize that not all change is bad. Embrace it. If you have had too much change on your plate in the last year, delay new changes that you can control for at least six months.

How do you do this?

By identifying the stressors that you are experiencing  by as:

  • Important but Changeable
  • Important and Unchangeable
  • Unimportant and Changeable
  • Unimportant and Unchangeable

What is important here it so sit down and actually identify and categorize the stressor or stressors and then determine which you can control. The more stressors that you are able to identify as changeable, the more control you will feel. All too frequently, we misidentify stressors as out of our control, when actually they are not.

Some creative thinking and a level of awareness can go a long way toward recognizing that you have much more control than you thought!

Stress Mastery Rx #4 from Dr. Jack SingerChange is not necessarily a bad thing. Embrace it, and find ways to see the positive outcomes of change for you.

I suggest you sit quietly with a notepad and pen and list what coping and buffer skills you need to work with. For instance, are you experiencing burnout and recognize that you need to take time each day and/or week for yourself but just don’t manage to do it? Determine to make that change by carving out YOU time and being consistent with it. It can be that you rise early each morning and take a 30 minute walk with the dog. It can be that you have a movie date with yourself each weekend where you just go do something fun that requires nothing of you other than that you enjoy yourself for that period of time. You will see very quickly that you are feeling calmer and more relaxed when you create this healthy habit.

The best balance is achieved by managing the way you deal with each stressor that comes along. rather than trying to eliminate each from your life altogether. Ask yourself what calm people do to maintain their stress levels and model their behavior when possible. For instance, do they jog or walk each morning before hitting the office?
