The next time you feel any negative emotion (overwhelmed, depressed, irritated, impatient, or hopeless), list the specific thoughts that went through your mind just before you felt that emotion. This is the first step in recovering from your stress.
By identifying the thoughts you are able to examine them and determine if the stressor is a perceived problem or a real one. Once you have identified negative thoughts, the next step is to examine them for reasonableness. Ask yourself to what extent the thoughts are valid. Take the time to look for both evidence that supports and evidence that refutes the thoughts. Writing down the evidence you find helps you gain distance from your thoughts and makes them less self-evident.[linebreak style=”23.png”]
