“There is more to life than increasing its speed.”  ~ Mohandas K. Gandhi

Challenge Your Negative ThoughtsDo you find yourself rushing through life so much you forget to stop and smell the flowers? When we do that, we tend to stress more, enjoy less, and possibly put ourselves at risk for burnout.  Whenever you recognize that you are upset and thinking negatively, use the quick reference guide of questions to challenge that negative thinking that we discussed in Stress Mastery Rx #11 here.

Once we recognize the distortions in our beliefs and thoughts, we can dispute or challenge them which then greatly diminishes the consequences.

The A-B-C-D-E Model

Activating event (Stress) → Beliefs (thoughts) about the event → Consequent emotions and behaviors → Disputing thoughts → Energized, revitalized emotions.

If you’re gona make a change, you’re gonna have to operate from a new belief that says life happens not TO me, but FOR me. ~ Tony Robbins

Stress Mastery Rx #10 from Dr. Jack SingerThe next time you feel any negative emotion (overwhelmed, depressed, irritated, impatient, or hopeless), list the specific thoughts that went through your mind just before you felt that emotion. This is the first step in recovering from your stress.

By identifying the thoughts you are able to examine them and determine if the stressor is a perceived problem or a real one.  Once you have identified negative thoughts, the next step is to examine them for reasonableness. Ask yourself to what extent the thoughts are valid. Take the time to look for both evidence that supports and evidence that refutes the thoughts. Writing down the evidence you find helps you gain distance from your thoughts and makes them less self-evident.

Words – so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good or evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them. ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne

Stress Mastery Rx #9 from Dr. Jack SingerRecognize that you are not a prisoner of past programming.  Just because you heard negative comments from your parents and others, does not make those statements accurate. You can choose to disregard them, and  you can decide not to repeat them to yourself. Instead, repeat healthy, optimistic thoughts to yourself daily.

Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it. – Ann Landers

Stress Mastery Rx #7 from Dr. Jack SingerNearly everyone has been hurt by the actions or words of another. You don’t need me to conjure up those old wounds, as you are undoubtedly doing it all by yourself just by reading this post. But if you don’t actively identify those wounds and then deliberately practice forgiveness, you just might be the one who pays most dearly.

By embracing forgiveness, you can also embrace peace, hope, gratitude and joy. Consider how forgiveness can lead you down the path of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. The prescription for today is: Let go of resentment y0u are harboring toward anyone or anything. Don’t harbor grudges. Forgive those who have hurt you and move on.

If you ask what is the single most important key to longevity, I would have to say it is avoiding worry, stress and tension. And if you didn’t ask me, I’d still have to say it. ~ George Burns

Stress Mastery Rx #6 from Dr. Jack Singer

Recognize that not all change is bad. Embrace it. If you have had too much change on your plate in the last year, delay new changes that you can control for at least six months.

How do you do this?

By identifying the stressors that you are experiencing  by as:

  • Important but Changeable
  • Important and Unchangeable
  • Unimportant and Changeable
  • Unimportant and Unchangeable

What is important here it so sit down and actually identify and categorize the stressor or stressors and then determine which you can control. The more stressors that you are able to identify as changeable, the more control you will feel. All too frequently, we misidentify stressors as out of our control, when actually they are not.

Some creative thinking and a level of awareness can go a long way toward recognizing that you have much more control than you thought!

My book has checklists and action plans for stress mastery but you can make your own and keep track of what you are doing to better your physical health, and thereby reduce your stress levels.

All 77 tips are featured, along with easy-to-learn tools for practicing stress mastery, in Dr. Jack’s nationally acclaimed book, ‘The Teacher’s Ultimate Stress Mastery Guide.’ You don’t have to be a teacher to change your life with this book. Dr. Jack’s tips apply to everyone, in all professions!”

ss Mastery Rx # 5 by Dr. Jack SingerOne of the most effective and oftentimes free ways to reduce stress it simply to get and stay fit. Run, bike, swim, walk with your dog, kids, spouse or friend and enjoy the fresh air and scenery. Or find a great place close to home to hike each week.  Aerobic (heart rate increasing) exercise releases endorphins. Other ways to benefit from exercise are dancing, gardening, or raking leaves.  You don’t have to engage in vigorous activity to benefit.

My book has checklists and action plans for stress mastery but you can make your own and keep track of what you are doing to better your physical health, and thereby reduce your stress levels.

Stress Mastery Tip #1 From Dr. Jack Singer

By Dr. Jack Singer | Stress Management

I get so many calls from people suffering from stress that I wanted to share some stress mastery tips with you each week. Please bookmark this site and visit each week for the newest tip.

Stress Mastery Tip #1

Practice breathing through your diaphragm.  Put your hands on your stomach and breathe deeply so that your hands move out when you inhale and move back in when you exhale.

If your hands are not moving and only your shoulders and chest move when you breathe deeply, you are engaging in shallow, less relaxing breathing. You can easily teach yourself to breath through your diaphragm with practice.
